MTEL Test

All states have certain expectations of their educators. If you want to be a teacher or educator in the state of Massachusetts, you will need to meet the standards of educational knowledge required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

MTEL Test

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) are designed to measure the communication and literary skills of candidates who are seeking certification to teach pre-kindergarten to grade 12. To become an educator, you will need to pass the exams and meet other eligibility requirements for licensure.

MTEL Test Study Guide | MTEL Exam Flashcards

There are four types of MTEL tests. Let us look briefly at what each MTEL test covers:

  1. Communication and Literary Skills Test: Includes two multiple-choice subtests in reading and writing, and each subtest has short-answer items and open-response items.
  2. Academic (PreK–12) subject matter tests: These tests measure proficiency and depth of understanding of specific subjects at a level required of an educator in Massachusetts public schools.
  3. Vocational Technical Literacy Skills Test: This MTEL test covers reading and writing. The writing subtest consists of three sections: written summary, written composition, and multiple-choice items covering grammar and mechanics.
  4. Adult Basic Education test: This test is for educators who plan to provide continuing education for adults. This test covers English language arts, English for speakers of other languages, mathematics, history, social science, and science.

Before taking any of the MTEL tests, you may want to check out an MTEL study guide, which will provide sample tests and practice questions for each category.
