Some large companies have marketing departments, but it is becoming increasingly common for businesses to hire freelance marketing consultants or to outsource their marketing efforts to large firms that specialize in marketing campaigns for specific industries. In some cases, marketing careers overlap with jobs in sales, promotions, advertising, or public relations.
Regardless of the type of employer you choose, marketing careers require strong written and verbal communication skills as well as a lot of creativity. You must be able to create a message that is persuasive to people from a variety of different backgrounds. In addition, much of the work that you do will be performed with a team of people who are responsible for the overall success of a particular marketing campaign.
Most marketing careers require a bachelor's degree. Obviously, marketing or business degrees are the most popular choice for people interested in working in this industry. However, many people do enter the field with a background in English or journalism. Even classes in psychology, sociology, anthropology, or economics can be helpful in developing an understanding of what a business's customers want. Therefore, a willingness to work hard and learn new skills is often considered more important than having a degree in a specific area.
