Insurance careers can involve selling health insurance, life insurance, auto insurance, homeowner's insurance, or renter's insurance. Insurance sales agents either work for an insurance company or refer their clients to an insurance broker after recommending a particular policy. They are supervised by sales managers who establish territories, quotas, and goals for insurance policy sales.
One often overlooked area of the insurance industry is the creation of policies themselves. Actuaries analyze statistical data regarding accidents, illness, disability, and mortality to determine the likelihood that the company would need to pay a claim on a particular policy. Insurance underwriters use the data compiled by actuaries to evaluate client applications and determine if a particular policy will be offered. The education needed for insurance careers varies. Many insurance agents and clerks have either a high school diploma or an associate's degree, although positions that involve higher level administrative or management responsibilities may require a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Actuary positions typically require a bachelor's degree with a background in statistics, actuarial science, finance, or economics. Some insurance careers also require state licensing or industry certification in addition to postsecondary education.
