ICTS Test

The Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) helps teachers and educators in Illinois meet the requirements of Illinois law, as established by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). If you want to teach or be an educator of any kind in Illinois, you will likely need to take the ICTS.

ICTS Test

The ICTS test is actually not a single test, but several categories of exams that assess mastery of basic skills, professional knowledge, and content area of specialization. These tests include the ICTS Basic Skills test, Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) tests, Foreign language content-area tests, Learning Behavior Specialist II (LBS II) tests, Language proficiency tests for the Transitional Bilingual Certificate, specific Content-area tests (other than foreign language), and tests for removal of an LBS I Limitation.

ICTS Test Study Guide | ICTS Exam Flashcards

Which test you should take depends on your teacher certification requirements, as each teaching position (elementary versus high school, for example) has different requirements. These requirements are determined by the Illinois State Board of Education.

You can register for the ICTS test at any time by internet, phone, or mail. At registration, you will be asked to provide your contact information and answers to background questions (primarily centered on your academic and professional history).

You should register early on in your certification process since times of high demand may create a shortage of testing seats.
