CTEL TestThe California Teacher of English Learners (CTEL) was developed by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the purpose of authorizing teachers to provide specialized instruction to English learners. This is especially important because California is a demographically diverse state. Many residents either do not know English or speak English as a second language.
The CTEL exam consists of three separate subtests: 1) language and language development, 2) assessment and instruction, and 3) culture and inclusion. The subtests are criterion referenced. This means that questions on the exam measure your knowledge and skills in relation to an established standard rather than in relation to the performance of other test-takers. Each CTEL subtest includes two kinds of questions: multiple choice and constructed-response. Multiple choice questions will require you to choose the best of four possible answers. Constructed-response questions will ask you to discuss, describe, analyze, explain, or interpret introductory material and a specific related reading assignment. If you will be taking the CTEL so that you can become an authorized teacher of English learners, you should consider using a CTEL study guide, which will guide you through exam specifics. A CTEL study guide will also offer practice exams and sample questions. Once you pass the CTEL exam and satisfy the required prerequisites, you will earn the English Learner Authorization credential.
