Cooking School

If you're a whiz in the kitchen, you may be dreaming of a career in the culinary arts. Whether you want to be a chef at a five star restaurant or open your own catering company, cooking school can help you achieve your career goals. Search for great cooking test study tips here.

Cooking school programs can be offered at a community college or through a private school that specializes in the culinary arts. Diploma or certificate programs vary in length from about six weeks to one year, although in culinary arts, it typically requires two years of full time study to complete an associate's degree.

You can receive federal student loans and grants to attend cooking school as long as the program has the proper accreditation. However, you should be aware that many for-profit private cooking schools have high tuition rates and poor records of placing graduates in professional positions. Since student loan debt is not dischargeable through bankruptcy in most circumstances, you will want to choose the school you attend very carefully.

In cooking school, you'll learn how to prepare a variety of dishes and how to follow laws regarding sanitation and cleanliness in a commercial kitchen. You'll be taking classes in business math, management, marketing, and communications in order to make sure you understand what is required to be successful in the restaurant business. Most culinary arts programs also have on-the-job training requirements that allow you to gain practical experience through externships and internships.
