CEN TestEmergency nurses who want to increase their knowledge and confidence may want to pursue Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification.
The CEN certification exam was developed by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing especially for emergency nurses in the United States. CEN certification reflects a higher level of professionalism and knowledge and often results in career advancement opportunities. It also can give more prestige to the institution at which you work. You must past the CEN exam in order to become CEN certified. The CEN exam is a timed, computerized test consisting of 150 scored multiple-choice questions and 25 pretest questions. You will have a maximum time of three hours to take the exam, and your scores will be available immediately. To register for the CEN exam, you will need to fill out the registration form and send it in by mail. Requirements for CEN exam eligibility include a current unrestricted license. Once your registration has been approved, you must schedule and take the exam within 90 days or you will forfeit your fees. Studying for the CEN exam is recommended. A CEN study guide will provide a content outline for the exam, along with testing strategies, sample questions, and practice tests. Once you pass the exam you are authorized to add the credential “CEN” after your name. Upon passing the examination, you will be certified for a four-year term after which time you will need to be recertified through exam, continuing education, or internet-based testing.
