CCRN Test Tips

CCRN certification is a specialty nursing credentialing program for nurses providing care for acutely and/or critically ill adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. To become eligible for CCRN certification, you must already be a licensed and experienced RN or APRN, and you must also pass the CCRN certification exams.

Before taking the CCRN certification exams, you need to allow enough time to study. Preparation is essential. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Get the Test Plan. Understanding the content of the exam is one of the most important aspects of studying. The CCRN Certification Exam Handbook includes a valuable tool called the “Test Plan” for the CCRN exam. Also known as an exam blueprint, the Test Plan breaks down test questions by content area and percentage.

Use a CCRN study guide. Along with the Test Plan and the Certification Handbook, a CCRN study guide will provide more practice exams and sample questions. Work through a couple practice exams, and review the correct answers of the ones you missed.

Do not forget other resources. You may want to purchase an online CCRN certification self-assessment exam, sign up for a CCRN exam review course, or join a campus study group. Talk with your colleagues and other certified nurses to learn about how they studied for the exam and what was most helpful for them.

Set a study schedule. Studying for CCRN certification should be a priority for at least two months prior to your scheduled exam. If finding time to study is a problem, you may need to include blocks of study time in your calendar and honor that commitment, just as you would honor a job or family commitment.
