ASWB Exams

Do you want to become a licensed social worker? Most social workers should have at least a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) and must be licensed by the state in which they work. Becoming a licensed social worker is multi-step process, and you must be able to pass the social work licensing exam developed by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB).

Here are some tips to help you prepare for the ASWB exams:

Confirm eligibility. Before you can take any of the ASWB exams, you will need to prove eligibility by meeting state board requirements. Make sure to check with your social work board for approval to take the exam. The board will also let you know which ASWB exams are required in your jurisdiction.

Take advantage of an ASWB study guide. Preparing ahead of time for the ASWB exam will help you feel more relaxed before taking the exam and will likely lead to better overall performance. While the ASWB offers an online practice exam and a hard-copy practice guide, you may also want to use additional study materials in addition to the ASWB resources.

Use ASWB exam outlines. Exam outlines are essential for your ASWB study efforts, and you can find them online at the ASWB website. Take some time to review the content outline of your particular ASWB exam category, as each category has its own outline. If possible, print the outline and keep it with all your study materials. Refer to it regularly.
