ASVAB Test TipsThe Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Test is a timed aptitude test developed by the United States Department of Defense. If you want to join the military, you will need to take the ASVAB Test. Here are some things you should know about the ASVAB Test: There are multiple sections to the ASVAB test. Part of the ASVAB test is called the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT). This subtest contains four main areas: Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge. The material on other subtests varies depending on the ASVAB version (Student ASVAB, CAT-ASVAB, or the MET-ASVAB). Your score will determine your military branch and occupation. Your score on the AFQT section will determine your military eligibility. Your scores in the other areas will decide which military occupational specialties and enlistment bonuses you will receive. The ASVAB is a timed, multiple-choice exam with three versions. Depending on which version you need, you can take the ASVAB exam at more than 14,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) nationwide. You will need to take a photo ID and several sharpened No. 2 pencils with you on the day of the test. The Student ASVAB is for high school and college students. It is used for career exploration and lasts about 3 hours. The CAT-ASVAB is computerized adaptive testing for potential military recruits. It takes about an hour and a half. The MET-ASVAB is used for enlistment and is given at a mobile examination test site; it lasts about two and a half hours. Practice tests and study guides are available online. Students who work through an ASVAB study guide generally perform better and achieve higher scores. Many of these materials are available online for free (www.military.com/ASVAB)
