ARDMS Test

The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) is a nonprofit organization that gives exams and credentials in sonography. Also known as ultrasound, sonography is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body.

ARDMS Test

ARDMS is the internationally recognized standard of excellence in sonography. There are four main ARDMS credentials: registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS), registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer (RCDS), registered vascular technologist (RVT), and registered physician in vascular interpretation (RPVI). Each of these ARDMS credentials is further categorized by specialty, such as fetal echocardiography, neurosonology, and obstetrics.

To earn an ARDMS credential, candidates must meet the prerequisites for the corresponding credentialing specialty exam, apply for credentials, and register for the exam. All of the exams contain multiple-choice questions and take about 2-3 hours to complete.

While prerequisites vary depending on the credential, each exam has several requirements: the appropriate educational background, necessary clinical ultrasound or vascular experience, and required documentation that must be submitted with the application. The entire application process is administered online through the ARDMS website, as ARDMS no longer accepts paper applications.

Before taking one of the ARDMS credentialing exams, you may want to check out an ARDMS study guide for your particular exam. The ARDMS also offers sample questions and practice exams. In addition to working your way through an ARDMS study guide, you should become very familiar with the content outline for your exam, which provides a percentage breakdown of the types of questions covered. Some of the content outlines are available online (www.ardms.org).
